Young Europeans cannot find a job
Today one in five young Europeans cannot find a job. SMEs are a key employer and are responsible for 80 % of newly created jobs. SMEs therefore have an important role to play in driving Europe's recovery. However, young people are generally more attracted by big multinational firms where they believe they will get more attractive jobs; whereas SMEs do not always seem to be so keen on employing young people due to their lack of skills and experience which can result in them missing out on a large pool of potential talent.
Aware of these challenges, the European Commission launched the Youth@Work action which aims to link together young people and SMEs in order to encourage SMEs to hire young people and, in turn, to promote working in SMEs as a career choice or as a springboard for young people interested in becoming entrepreneurs.

Grzegorz Babynko
I'm Grzegorz Babynko, born in northern Poland. I'm from Olstyn, and that's also where I live and work.
I chose to start my own business because I wanted to be independent and not work for someone else. I make and sell jewellery and I'm an expert at valuing precious stones.
When I decided on this, I got a subsidy from the Work Office, so that I could buy the necessary machines and start the business. I like being my own boss, but sometimes it’s difficult since I have to take all decisions on my own and bear the consequences of all that I do.
People sometimes regard me with mild distrust because of my age, but thanks to my qualifications and my command of the trade I can win them over quickly.
I also sell through two on-line shops and through Allegro. Internet sales are developing quickly in Poland.
In the future I want to keep developing my company and my production. I'm also thinking of opening a second shop.
